National Honesty Day
Did you know that today is National Honesty Day? I didn't either until I read today's daily devotional in "Our Daily Bread". "Author M. Hirsh Goldberg established National Honesty Day in the early 1990s as a way to honor the honorable and encourage honesty. He said that April 30 was selected because “April begins with a day dedicated to lying [April Fool’s Day] and should end on a higher moral note.”" --ODB
That brings me to my thought for today. April begins with a "lie", so to speak, and ends with truth. It begins with a fools day and ends with a wise man's day. What a contrast! This kind of contrast is seen throughout the Book of Proverbs. In fact, it's seen throughout the Bible. 1 Corinthians 1:17-18 says, "For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God..." Paul continues this contrast in the following verses: 1 Corinthians 1:19-25.
The Psalmist David says in Psalm 14:1, "The fool has said in his heart, 'there is no God.'...." Notice where the fool says it...'in his heart.' Not in his mind, but in his heart. The heart is speaking of the volition, the will. The mind refers to the intelligence. When the fool says there is no God, he is saying it from his heart, from his will. In other words, in his mind he knows there is a God, but in his heart, by his own foolish volition, he refuses to believe there is a God. Technically, as well as theologically, there is no such thing as an atheist. Why? Because God has created eternity in man's heart (see Ecclesiastes 3:11). Man knows there is a God. He knows there is a higher, creative power. The problem is he just refuses to believe it. He refuses to believe what his mind already knows. It's real simple. If you have a building, then it stands to reason (in the mind) that you have a builder. If you have a watch, then you have a watch maker. And we have a creation, thus there is a Creator. And His name is Jesus, for by Him and through Him, all things were created (see Col. 1:16).
So the fool knows in his mind. But what makes him a fool is his unbelieving heart. Someone has quipped that April Fools Day should be celebrated by the atheist. So let's make today, National Honesty Day, a day that we, as believers, celebrate the truth. And truth is a Person, Jesus Christ. For He said, "I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me." -John 14:6. Truth day for the believer is everyday. In fact, truth day is everyday for everybody! It's just that the fools refuse to believe it!
